WESTSIDE CIRCUS PROGRAM BRINGS SHEPPARTON YOUTH UNDER THE BIG TOP WITH  WORLD FAMOUS CIRQUE DU SOLEIL

THROUGH A WESTSIDE CIRCUS PROGRAM, YOUNG PEOPLE FROM SHEPPARTON HAVE BEEN OFFERED A CHANCE TO LEARN FROM THE STARS OF CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S LATEST SHOW IN MELBOURNE, FOLLOWED BY A VISIT BACKSTAGE AT CIRQUE DU SOLEIL BIG TOP, ON THURSDAY 16TH MARCH 2017.

On February 19th a group of 16 young people from Shepparton travelled to Melbourne as part of Westside Circus’s Altitude Program, to see the latest Cirque Du Soleil’s show. And now many of them will return to learn from the artists and see first-hand what it’s like to be a circus performer, through a circus workshop and backstage tour. They have been specially selected for this opportunity as part of the Westside Circus Social Circus program, and in 2017 are the only youth in Victoria to be offered this chance.

Working with young people in Shepparton has become a focus of Westside Circus’s social circus activities, building on more than 8 years of successful partnering with Shepparton ACE College.

Together we have been using circus to support increased engagement with education for young people who have experienced challenges in mainstream institutions. Whilst it is no surprise that Circus offers young people a fun way to develop physical skills, it is also a powerful tool for building social skills that can have a significant impact on success in all aspects of their life. In Shepparton, Westside Circus together with our partners are using circus as a tool for teaching VCAL curriculum and developing work ready skills. With plans to continue these programs for at least three more years we also dream that maybe one day, Shepparton will have a circus all of its own!
